Liposuction
Liposuction is a simple procedure that removes the stubborn fat that does not go away with your regular diet and exercises. It permanently removes the fat cells that stores fat from a particular part of your body that you want to improve.
Liposuction is one of the most common plastic surgery procedures. The number of surgeries is going up each day .In an average, more than 1,00,and 000 liposuction procedures happen each year in India alone. Around the world, liposuction represents between 20% and 25% of all cosmetic surgeries.
Who can get liposuction?
- Adults with an average or slightly above-average weight BMI<30

- People with realistic goals for the outcome of the procedure.
Who cannot get liposuction?
- People with excessive skin fat like in past bariatric surgery.
- People with bleeding disorders.
- Chain smokers.

You can have a liposuction procedure anywhere on your body where you have deposits of fat. Some of the most common areas of your body include you’re:
- Abdomen, stomach or waist.
- Hips or “love handles” (flank).
- Back or chest.
- Face, cheeks, chin or neck.
- Buttocks.
- Inner knee, calves or ankles.
- Thighs.
- Upper arms.
Why is liposuction helpful?
Liposuction is useful in getting rid of fat from unwanted areas and achieving the dream body you desire. It can be as simple as flaunting that perfect figure to wearing the clothes you didn’t fit earlier.
Types of liposuction,
- Manual – Regular type, cannules are used to break down fat. It is useful for small areas in the body. It is associated with surgeon fatigue.
- Mechanical – vibrating cannulas are used in breaking fat, useful mainly for larger liposuction procedures.
- Energy based – Ultrasound or laser energy is used to break down fat. Main benefit is skin tightening that happens due to energy dissipation.
How is liposuction done?
The procedure is hassle free and done as a day care procedure. It begins by using a “sedation anesthesia” which induces sleep and numbs the tissues. Then the procedure starts by making small incisions into the skin, around 5mm, a special fluids are injected to aid the fat removal process. Following this, fat is broken down and sucked out by means of suction medical devices. The procedure ends when desired effect is achieved.
How do I prepare for liposuction surgery?
Your surgeon will give you specific instructions to follow before your liposuction surgery. You may need to:
- Avoid alcohol at least 3-5 days prior to the surgery
- Ask your physician and stop taking blood thinning medications.
- Consume normal diet the previous day and nothing by mouth as per surgeon’s advice.
- Quit smoking at least 2 weeks prior to the surgery.
What happens after a liposuction procedure?
- There might be fluid coming out of liposuction hole. It is normal and might leak for up to 24 hours.
- There will be pain and little discomfort, medications will solve them.
- Swelling and bruising will flare up, but will subside over time.
- Continue to wear compression stockings at all times.
When to resume everyday activities after surgery?
Household chores can be performed the very next day. You can resume riding vehicles and mild aerobic activities in a week. Strength training activities can be resumed in 3 weeks time.
