Labiaplasty is a surgical procedure performed to reduce the size of the skin fold in Labia Minora. During sexual intercourse or intense physical activities, the excess skin gets twisted and causes discomforts.
In other words, there are folds of skin on either side of your vaginal opening. The skin is called Labia. It is fleshy and helps protect the genital organs. The outer folds are called Labia Majora while the inner is called Labia Minora. Labia Majora means large lips and Labia Minora means small lips. This results in emotional distress and physical discomforts during sexual intercourse. When an athlete is engaged in physical activity, the tissue attaches to the leg causing discomfort. The skin protrusion can also cause discomforts while riding a bicycle.
The surgery helps reduce discomforts that result from the excess skin fold or what we call Labia Minora.
Why does Labia become oversized?
Labia around the vagina grows in size due to the following reasons.
- Aging
- Pregnancy and childbirth
- Increase in weight
- Menopause
- Genetical factors
Why take Labiaplasty?
Labiaplasty helps solve the following problems.
- Normally, labia should be between 1 and 3 millimeters longer. When it grows longer, it causes discomfort and infection.
- Bacteria in the area cause urinary tract infections. Removing the skin fold of labia minora helps improve intimate hygiene and health.
- Regain the youth after child birth or as a result of aging.
- Remove the darker part of the labia.
- Reduces discomforts and irritation during sexual intercourse and physical activities.
- Sometimes, one side of the skin, either the labia minora or labia majora is longer than the other. Labiaplasty helps solve the asymmetry between the labia minora or labia majora.
- Tight fitting clothes like swimsuits or shorts cause lines or bulges which in turn impacts the confidence of the person. Labiaplasty sorts the problem and boosts one’s self esteem.
Before surgery
Before you undergo the Labiaplasty procedure, he will do a detailed examination of your medical records and evaluation of your current medication. He will discuss the goals and expectations in detail so he can align the surgical procedure with the requirements.
The doctor may seek preoperative tests including blood reports, urinalysis, and X-rays. The doctor may also ask you to stop taking certain medications and blood thinners. He may also ask you to stop smoking and alcohol consumption for a specific duration post surgery. The surgeon will also explain the intricate details of the procedure and what to expect at the end of the surgery.
During the surgery
Labiaplasty is generally performed under the administration of general anesthesia. The surgeon will clean your pubic area, labia, and the skin around. He also places a catheter in the urethra. There are two procedures when it comes to Labiaplasty.
Trimming:
In this procedure, the surgeon creates an incision and trims the excess skin and tissue from the outer edge of the labia minora so it is evenly aligned with the outer labia or labia majora. Some women take labiaplasty to remove the darker area of the labia. Labiaplasty helps trim the dark portion of the labia and increases its appeal.
Wedging:
In this procedure, the surgeon removes a wedge or pie-shaped tissue from the sides of the labia minora. He then stitches the sides of the labia minora. In case your objective is to reduce labia majora, a similar procedure can be followed.
The complete surgery takes around 2 hours. The catheter is removed at the end of the surgery. The surgeon will monitor you for bleeding.
post operative care
You may experience swelling and discomfort in the initial days. Swelling goes off after 4-6 weeks. Bleeding is common and it may last for a day or two. The doctor will prescribe pain relievers and medications for a specific time. He may also prescribe medicines to overcome constipation and poop without straining much.
You may also use cold compress to relieve yourselves from pain. During the recovery, use a loose-fitting undergarment as tighter garments prolongs healing.
Exercise caution while bathing and washing the vaginal area. Use lukewarm water to clean the area. Wipe off the area gently after urinating and ensure that you don’t rub the area vigorously. Limit yourself from strenuous physical activity, cycling, swimming, etc., for at least 6 weeks post surgery. You may engage in light activities after a week or so. We recommend you not indulge in sexual intercourse for at least 6 weeks. You may resume the normal course of your lives after your doctor’s approval.
